The Party Wall etc. Act 1996 was developed to provide a legal framework for preventing and resolving potential disputes in relation to works being undertaken to party walls, boundary walls, party structures and the excavations near to neighbouring buildings.

The Party Wall etc. Act 1996 is a separate piece of legislation to planning permission and building regulations and is intended to safeguard the interests of both the building owner (the undertaker of the works) and the adjoining owner.
